Parking garage Nørre Allé opens with ceremonial act
Borgholzhausen, Copenhagen, August 17, 2010: On June 22, 2010 the City of Copenhagen officially opened the Danish capital’s first fully-automated parking garage with a huge inauguration ceremony. After a successful test run during spring, the parking garage with 164 underground parking positions is now open to the public. The City of Copenhagen also counts on Westfalia’s competency in two further parking projects.
Getting to know a new technology
The City of Copenhagen installed the first fully-automated parking garage in Denmark. Before opening the facility to the public, approximately 50 local drivers were chosen to participate in a test run during the spring. Some drivers initially viewed the system with some skepticism, but the enthusiasm and excitement of the test drivers grew immediately upon their first automated parking experience. ”The handling is as easy as in a car wash or at a gas station. It is fantastic,” enthuses Peter Jønsson, one of the selected test drivers. On June 22, 2010 the official inauguration of the parking garage Nørre Allé took place and the new way of parking attracted numerous visitors. Since then, the automated parking garage has consistently gained popularity from the community. Mayor Bo Asmus Kjeldgaard is excited about the wide acceptance. ”The parking garage Nørre Alleé is a part of our parking strategy. When parking the cars below the street, we can create public space for green oases in the city and get more space for cyclists and pedestrians“.
Nørre Allé as starting point for a long-term strategy and partnership with Westfalia
In addition to the parking garage Nørre Allé, the City of Copenhagen is currently building two other fully automated parking garages, both of which are being installed by Westfalia. ”We are proud to be able to help the City of Copenhagen with our products. We are both celebrating a premiere – Copenhagen with the first automated parking garage and Westfalia with its first implemented parking system in Denmark. At the same time we are very glad about the smooth cooperation with the City of Copenhagen who has always supported our committed Project Managers in all aspects,” says Westfalia’s managing director, Andreas Gartemann. The projects ”Under Elmene“ and ”Leifsgade“ will be ready in the autumn of this year and will contain 268 and 408 parking spaces, respectively. ”Westfalia’s automated parking experience and system convinced us and perfectly matches our efforts regarding sustainability” underlines Torben Gleesborg, Director of Department of the City of Copenhagen. Automated parking systems by Westfalia not only save up to 35% of space but also double the amount of parking positions on the same footprint. They also reduce energy costs due to the elimination of ventilation and lighting systems. Furthermore, up to 80% less pollutant emissions are emitted into the air because driving through the garage is eliminated.
